Harry Potter in Academics:
Political and Psychological Implications of Harry Potter in Modern Culture
MISTI-Con 2015 is excited to welcome the following keynote speakers:
Professor Jack (Anthony) Gierzynski
Professor Gierznyski has published four books: Harry Potter and the Millennials: Research Methods and the Politics of the Muggle Generation (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013), Saving American Elections (Cambria Press, 2011); Money Rules (Westview Press 2000); and Legislative Party Campaign Committees in the American States (University Press of Kentucky 1992). He has written over a dozen articles and book chapters on campaign finance, political parties, and elections; been part of research teams awarded grants from the National Science Foundation and the Joyce Foundation; and, been an expert witness and consultant in several court cases testing campaign finance laws, including the US Supreme Court case Randall v Sorrell. He is the Director of the Vermont Legislative Research Service. His current projects include a book on the media and politics, and research articles on the impact of entertainment media such as Game of Thrones, The House of Cards, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on the political views of fans of those shows.

John Granger
John Granger is described by TIME as the “Dean of Harry Potter Scholars,” He has been writing and speaking about the artistry and meaning of Joanne Rowling’s Hogwarts Adventures since 2002. In all that time, he has consistently been ahead of the pack in understanding and explaining why readers love the Potter Saga.
John’s insights about Harry Potter have been published by Tyndale, Penguin Books, and Zossima Press. In addition to How Harry Cast His Spell, Granger is the author of Unlocking Harry Potter: Seven Keys for the Serious Reader, The Deathly Hallows Lectures: The Hogwarts Professor Explains the Final Harry Potter Adventure, and Harry Potter’s Bookshelf: The Great Books Behind the Hogwarts Adventures.

Dr. Scarlet is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, a scientist, and a full time geek. She uses Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and trauma at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Management and Sharp Memorial Hospital. Dr. Scarlet is also a professor at Alliant International University, San Diego. Dr. Scarlet has presented her work at professional psychological conferences, as well as a number of pop culture conventions, such as the San Diego Comic Con, Comikaze, and WonderCon. She has been interviewed about her work on Huffington Post Live, as well as numerous podcasts.
